Crossing the Road Safely – Be a Role Model for Our Children
At Warrigal Road State School, the safety of our students is our top priority — and that includes what happens before and after the bell rings. One of the most important lessons we can teach our children isn’t in the classroom — it’s how to cross the road safely.
Each day, hundreds of students arrive and leave school via busy roads. They look to the adults around them for guidance. That’s why it’s so important that parents, carers, and family members lead by example.
We’ve noticed that some people are choosing to cross roads between cars, outside designated crossings, or when the lights haven’t yet changed. While this may save a few seconds, it puts everyone at risk — especially young children who are watching and learning.
To bring some humour and awareness to this serious issue, we created a short movie featuring two very special guests: Mr Carter and Judge Geary. Let’s just say things didn’t go quite as planned when Mr Carter forgot to follow the road safety rules!
Check out the video on our Warrigal Road State School Facebook page to see what happened!
The message is clear:
Use the designated crossings
Wait for the signal
Be alert, not distracted
Hold hands with young children
Set the example — every time
By following the road rules ourselves, we’re helping to keep our children safe and empowering them to make safe choices for life.
Let’s work together to protect our most precious pedestrians.
After School Procedures at Warrigal Road State School
Supporting a Safe and Smooth End to Every School Day
As the school bell rings each afternoon, our priority remains the same: ensuring every student is safely on their way home or to after-school care. To make this possible, we ask all families to follow our after-school procedures closely.
Supervision and Exits
A staff member is positioned at every school exit until 3:30pm to help monitor student safety and assist with end-of-day routines. Students are expected to leave promptly unless attending OSHC or waiting with a parent or carer.
Pick-Up Timing
To help reduce congestion and wait times:
-
Parents of older students are encouraged to arrive after 3:15pm, once the initial rush has eased.
-
This allows for a smoother pick-up and less traffic around the school gates.
Pick-Up Zones
-
Use the designated pick-up/drop-off areas only.
-
Stay in your vehicle and move forward as directed by staff.
-
We recommend your family name (or code name) is clearly displayed for efficient identification. Mrs Geary at the office has plenty of dashboard displays if you want one.
Walkers and Riders
-
Students walking or riding home must use designated pedestrian exits and follow road safety rules.
Uncollected Students
-
Any student not collected by 3:30pm will be taken to the school office.
-
Parents will be contacted, and students must remain inside the office area until collected and be signed out.
While we understand that occasional delays due to traffic or unforeseen circumstances can happen, these should be rare exceptions.
Please note:
-
Repeated late pick-ups may be referred to relevant authorities.
-
After 3:30pm, after-hours supervision fees apply — currently $200 per minute.
-
We highly recommend registering with our OSHC (Outside School Hours Care) service if you are regularly unable to collect your child on time.
Celebrating the Sounds-Write Success at Warrigal Road!
Over the past few weeks, our leadership team has had the absolute pleasure of visiting classrooms across the school to witness the incredible teaching and learning taking place during Sounds-Write reading sessions.
From Prep to Year 6, it has been inspiring to see the dedication, consistency, and expertise with which our teachers and teacher aides are delivering high-quality reading instruction. Classrooms are alive with purposeful learning — students are engaged, confident, and making strong connections between sounds, letters, and words.
Sounds-Write is a highly effective, evidence-based approach to teaching reading, and it has become an integral part of our whole-school commitment to improving literacy outcomes for every student. What stood out most during our visits was the clarity of routines, the precision of instruction, and the warm, supportive environments that make learning to read both successful and joyful.
We want to acknowledge and celebrate the incredible efforts of our teachers and teacher aides, who continue to demonstrate unwavering commitment to the program. Whether it's guiding students through a new sound, supporting their blending and segmenting skills, or reinforcing previous learning with enthusiasm — the results speak for themselves.
Thank you for your continued work in ensuring every Warrigal student has the strongest possible foundation in reading. Your impact is seen daily in your students’ progress and confidence — and we are so proud of the consistent excellence being delivered in every classroom.

GALA RESULTS
Senior A Girls Soccer
After a long wait, the sunshine finally arrived and the fields dried up enough, for our Warrigal students to board the buses for their second and final Gala Day for the semester. The Senior A Girls Soccer team arrived with one goal in mind: to bring home the flag!
The day kicked off with a commanding 4–0 win over BCC, setting the tone for what was to come. But it was the next match against long-time rivals, Stretton, that would determine the overall champions. Both teams entered the game undefeated with four wins each, making this the ultimate decider.
The match was intense, with both sides showing strong defence and great connection across the field. But it was our very own Met West superstar, Myla, who broke the deadlock about 10 minutes in, slotting the ball into the back of the net to give us the lead.
The pressure didn’t let up. The girls had to stay focused and composed. Verona’s fearless performance in goals was a standout, showcasing her determination to keep a clean sheet. With just three minutes left on the clock, Darya’s relentless effort paid off, as she found the back of the net again - securing a 2nil victory.
The win crowned our team as Back-to-Back Sunnybank Cluster Champions!
Well done, girls! Your commitment, dedication, and sportsmanship were evident throughout the season. You truly are a dream team to coach. Congratulations on a well-deserved premiership!
McDonald's Awards went to Anna, Darya and Ammara

Junior A Girls Soccer
The Junior A Girls Soccer team showed incredible growth this season! They made remarkable progress in both their skill level and understanding of the game. Once players found the positions that best suited them and the team’s needs, they became a force to be reckoned with.
Gala Day 2 kicked off with a dominant 4-0 win over Calamvale. Next, they faced the undefeated Yeronga team, who were highly disciplined and well-drilled. Although the girls didn’t come away with a win, they played with heart and demonstrated the most improvement between the two teams across their matchups.
Determined to finish strong, they bounced back with a confident 3-0 victory over Stretton, who they drew with, earlier in the season. They then capped off the day with a 1-0 win against ICB.
This strong finish secured the Junior A Girls the title of Runners-Up in their competition. A huge congratulations to all the players! I’m so proud of your progress and can’t wait to continue the soccer journey with you next year.
McDonald's Awards went to Mikayla, Lily, Karina and Arina.

In Game 1, the girls faced a tough Brisbane Christian College A team and went down 16–0. In Game 2, they battled hard against Sunnybank B, with Carter scoring in a 26–4 result. The team finished the day on a high note with a strong 12–4 win over Warrigal B, showcasing great teamwork and persistence.
Congratulations to Ruby and Soraya, our Players of the Day, for their fantastic efforts and positive attitude on court. Well done to the whole team for their continued improvement and school spirit!
Junior Girls B Basketball – Gala Day 2 Recap
The Junior Girls B basketball team showed resilience and a positive attitude during Gala Day 2, continuing to build their skills and teamwork across three competitive matches.
Game 1 was a tough start against a strong Sunnybank B team, with a 34–0 result. In Game 2, the girls bounced back with a fantastic 8–2 win over Robertson B, demonstrating great defence and communication. Game 3 saw a determined effort against Warrigal A, finishing with a 12–4 loss.
Well done to our Players of the Day, Pahul and Diya, for their excellent performance and sportsmanship. The team should be proud of their progress and effort on the court!

Boys Basketball – Senior Teams
Senior Boys Basketball - Term 2 Gala Day Recap
This term saw our Warrigal Road Senior Boys Basketball teams hit the courts for two full days of interschool competition. The Year 6 team brought energy, effort, and heart to every game they played. They had a strong showing on Day 1, with impressive wins built on quick passing, smart defence, and a real hunger for the ball. Day 2 brought tougher opponents, but the boys held their heads high and never backed down.
Unlike some teams that rely heavily on a couple of standout players, our WRSS boys showed real team chemistry. They moved the ball selflessly, supported each other on the court, and always hustled back in defence. David C. was a force in the paint, pulling down rebounds like a magnet. Daniel H. showed incredible leadership at point guard, setting the tempo and keeping everyone calm and Sario dropped some key three-pointers under pressure. However, the defensive intensity of Hasnain, Cooper, Finn, Nathan, Samar, Jayden, Vishwa and Gursidak made life difficult for our opponents and was “Mr Gallaher’s play of the day.”
What stood out most was the sportsmanship and resilience of the group. Whether they were up by 10 or down by 5, they gave everything.
Well done to all our senior boys—your teamwork, effort, and improvement across the term were outstanding. You have done Warrigal proud!

Mr Gallaher - Coach
Boys Soccer – B Teams
The boys have been working hard this semester showing up consistently on training days. With eagerness, they have enjoyed playing games and developing their skills.
The boys were ready when it came to Gala Day 2. As the day progressed, their teamwork was evident. They pushed themselves, passing the ball to their team mates and using their positions. The Juniors had 3 draws and 1 win, while the Senior Team had 2 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss. It was exciting to see the boys enthusiasm and eagerness to play. They supported one another and it was encouraging to see them work together as a team.

Mr Tinker - Coach
“It is performance ready if you can play 7 times without error. If you mess up on the 6th run through, you have to start over.”
To be truly ready to perform a piece (such as a song or instrumental part), you should be able to play it perfectly—without any mistakes—seven times in a row. If you make a mistake on any of those seven attempts, even the 6th time, you don’t just keep going—you start the count over from the beginning.
Why this method works:
- It builds consistency, not just luck.
- It ensures your performance is reliable under pressure, not just something you got right once.
- It helps you stay focused and correct small errors before they become habits.
In short:
This rule is about setting a high standard for yourself. If you can play it perfectly 7 times in a row, you’re likely to perform it well on stage—even when you’re nervous.

Second place - Anglican Church Grammar School Prep Voices
Third place - Warrigal Road State School Chamber Choir AND Robertson State School Cantabile
The Harley Mead Encouragement Award was awarded to Dalby State School Senior Singers.
Thomastik Orchestra students recently had the wonderful opportunity to collaborate with string students from a variety of schools across the Karawatha community.
They worked alongside peers of similar ability levels, guided by a team of skilled and inspiring conductors. This collaborative experience not only fostered musical growth but also strengthened their ensemble skills and confidence as young musicians.
Opportunities like this are invaluable in encouraging ongoing practice, dedication, and development. Thank you to Runcorn State High School for organising yet another outstanding event. The Gala Concert was a fantastic celebration of talent, teamwork, and community spirit.
I’ve received many positive comments from teachers regarding your performances at each assembly this term. These opportunities are not only a joy to share with our school community, but they also serve as valuable preparation—especially with Fanfare just around the corner. Performing regularly helps build your confidence, improves your stage presence, and sharpens your musical skills.
The more we perform, the more prepared we are—and the better we become. Keep up the great work!

I am delighted to invite all Warrigal Road State School students to join in the 2025 Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC).
The PRC is not a competition but a way to encourage students to develop a love of reading for life. Students are encouraged to select a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their reading ability and record books read during the reading period, from 6 May to 22 August. Enclosed is a reader record form to tally book read throughout the challenge.
To complete the challenge:
- Prep to Year 2 must read or experience at least 20 books
- Years 3 and 4 must read at least 20 books
- Years 5 to 9 must read at least 15 books.
Experiencing books can include shared reading, listening to stories, or reading picture books. The aim for the 2025 challenge is to encourage students to make time to read. Last year saw more than 216,000 children from around the state participate.
