Year 3 and 5 Students Sitting NAPLAN
Our Year 3 and 5 students are participating in NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy), an important opportunity to demonstrate their learning in reading, writing, spelling, grammar, and mathematics. These assessments provide valuable insights into student progress and help guide our teaching to best support every learner.
At Warrigal Road State School, we approach NAPLAN with a positive mindset, encouraging students to do their best while remembering that these tests are just one part of their learning journey. From the first day a child enters Prep, our teachers work hard to ensure students feel prepared and confident, with a focus on developing strong literacy and numeracy skills. We beleive that this is the best way to prepare our students for NAPLAN.
To support your child during NAPLAN week, we recommend ensuring they get a good night’s sleep, have a healthy breakfast, and arrive at school on time. A calm and encouraging approach at home can also help set the tone for a smooth experience.
We are proud of all our students and look forward to seeing them give their best effort. If you have any questions about NAPLAN, please reach out to your child’s teacher.
Good luck to our Year 3 and 5 students—we know you’ll do us proud!
Olympian Taylor McKeown visiting Warrigal Road SS
Taylor McKeown will be connecting with Year 4; Year 5; Year 6 students on 31/03/2025 9:00 AM, as part of Olympics Unleashed.
The students will learn from Taylor McKeown's Olympic journey how to build resilience, the importance of setting goals and how to find what you are passionate about.
Students will hear firsthand from Taylor McKeown about how they overcame challenges to compete in their chosen sport at the very highest level, and how some lessons they’ve learned in sport can help students to be the best they can be – whether that’s in school, at home, on the sporting field or with friends.
Upcoming Changes to Report Cards for Prep – Year 2 in 2025
At Warrigal Road State School, we are committed to providing clear, meaningful feedback on student progress. In line with the latest updates to the Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Framework (CARF) 2025, all State Schools will be adjusting the reporting scale for Prep – Year 2 to better reflect early learning progress.
From 2025 onwards, the A–E grading scale will no longer be used for students in these year levels. Instead, student achievement will be reported using the Applying – Beginning scale, which aligns with the way young learners develop and demonstrate their understanding.
What Does This Mean?
Rather than receiving an A–E grade, students in Prep – Year 2 will be assessed on a new five-point scale:
- Applying (AP): The student confidently applies their learning in new and familiar situations.
- Making Connections (MC): The student demonstrates a solid understanding and can apply their learning with some independence.
- Working With (WW): The student is developing their understanding and requires some support.
- Exploring (EX): The student is beginning to develop foundational knowledge and skills.
- Beginning (BG): The student is at an early stage of learning and requires significant support.
Why the Change?
This new reporting scale provides a more developmentally appropriate way to describe student progress in the early years. It focuses on growth and learning progress rather than traditional grades, helping parents and teachers better understand where a child is on their learning journey and how to support their continued development.
Supporting Your Child
As always, student learning at Warrigal Road is guided by the Australian Curriculum, and our teachers use a range of assessments to monitor progress and provide targeted support. If you have any questions about this change or how your child is progressing, we encourage you to speak with your child’s teacher.
We look forward to working together to support your child’s learning in 2025 and beyond!
Reminder: Drive, Park, and Cross Safely Around Our School
On Wednesday, police were present in Demigre Street, enforcing road rules to ensure the safety of our students and community. Several drivers received fines for parking on yellow lines and leaving their vehicles unattended in the drop-off zone.
This is an important reminder that these rules are in place to keep traffic flowing and, most importantly, to protect our students. Drop-off zones are strictly for quick stops—drivers must remain in their vehicles and move on promptly after dropping off or picking up children. Parking on yellow lines is illegal and creates dangerous visibility issues for pedestrians and other drivers.
We also remind all students and families to cross the road safely by using designated crossings or traffic lights. Jaywalking or crossing between cars is extremely dangerous, especially during peak school times. Our crossing supervisors are there to assist—please encourage your children to follow their instructions and use safe crossing points at all times.
The police have confirmed they will be returning, so we strongly encourage all families to follow the road rules to avoid fines and, more importantly, to help create a safer environment for everyone.
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our school community safe.
