Keeping Our Eyes on the Prize: Warrigal Road’s Educational Values at Work
At Warrigal Road State School, we know exactly what we stand for. Our Educational Values are not just feel-good words on a poster; they are the driving force behind every lesson, every activity, and every decision we make. They are hierarchical, deliberate, and deeply embedded in our school culture. They guide us in our core business—academic excellence—while ensuring that every child is developing the skills they need to navigate life beyond the classroom.
The Foundation of Learning
At the very base of our values sits Wellbeing (1)—because let’s face it, if students aren’t feeling safe, supported, and ready to learn, then nothing else matters. But wellbeing at Warrigal isn’t just about warm and fuzzy moments; it’s about ensuring every child can engage, focus, and strive for success.
From there, we move into Foundation Skills (2)—the essential literacy and numeracy skills that underpin all learning. These aren’t just school skills; they are life skills. Without them, doors close. With them, the world opens. We make no apologies for prioritising them.
Beyond the Basics: Learning That Lasts
Once the foundations are solid, we build. Partnerships in Learning (3) are key. Education isn’t a solo journey—it’s a collaboration. Teachers, parents, students, and the wider community all play a role in shaping our learners. We work together because we know that meaningful learning happens when students see the bigger picture and connect their schoolwork to the world around them.
Then there’s Student Agency (4)—giving students the opportunity to take ownership of their learning. It’s not about handing over the reins entirely, but about fostering independence and responsibility. Whether it’s tackling a challenge in a structured lesson or problem-solving their way through an obstacle at Holt Bolt, we want our students to think, engage, and push themselves.
The Peak: Future-Ready Learners
Finally, at the top of our hierarchy is the Inquiry Curriculum (5)—the pinnacle of deep thinking, creativity, and problem-solving. Our goal isn’t just to teach facts; it’s to teach students how to question, explore, and innovate. This is where we challenge them to think beyond worksheets and into the world, preparing them for jobs that don’t even exist yet.
What This Means for You
Parents, we ask you to reflect: how do these values play out at home? How do you reinforce resilience, responsibility, and curiosity? Education doesn’t stop when the school bell rings. The best learning happens when children see that what they do at school has real-world relevance. Whether it’s reading with them, encouraging problem-solving at home, or modeling lifelong learning, you play a critical role.
At Warrigal Road, we don’t just teach; we prepare. And we do it with purpose. Our values aren’t just words; they are actions. Let’s keep them front and centre, together.

Requests for late payments cannot be accommodated, so please make sure that you have responded by the due date.
We have a number of payment arrangements available which can help make payments more manageable. We have many families currently taking advantage of these arrangements. If you would like further information, please contact the Business Manager.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school office.
Please check the lost property box in the tuckshop area for any of your students lost items. The box will be emptied and any unclaimed items will be donated to charity or disposed of after Friday. A REMINDER- please label all your students items so they can be returned to your student if found.

STUDENT ABSENCE PHONE LINE - 33405360
EMAIL: absences@warrigalroadss.eq.edu.au
Absences from school for 11 days or more require an exemption application to be submitted with supporting documentation.
EXTENDED STUDENT ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL
Absences from school for 11 days or more require an exemption application to be submitted with supporting documentation prior to day of departure.
Parents often apply for exemption from school to take an overseas holidays and avoid the high costs of plane flights during holiday periods. This means that some children, in addition to the twelve weeks of annual school holidays already available to students in Queensland, may have as much as four months or more away from school. This has an enormous impact on their learning and, so, taking more time by having school time used for holidays, is to be discouraged.
I appreciate the importance of family in the lives of our children, but we cannot be responsible for a child’s education if he/she is not actually at school. Education policy states:
Pursuant to s.176(1) of the Education General Provisions Act 2006 (Qld), each parent of a child who is of compulsory school age must ensure that the child is enrolled and attends school on every school day for the educational program in which the child is enrolled unless the parent has a reasonable excuse.
Pursuant to s.239(1) of the Education General Provisions Act 2006 (Qld), a parent of a young person in the compulsory participation phase must ensure the young person is participating full-time in an eligible option, unless the parent has a reasonable excuse.
If you are going to take holidays during school time, please do not disregard the impact of that on student learning. The curriculum is a prep to year 6 continuum – gaps in learning may create bigger problems as the years roll on.
A reasonable explanation must be given if a holiday exemption is requested and evidence must be supplied. If you have relevant evidence for the need to travel at that particular time, this can be submitted to the office without an interview. If you have no evidence of the reason for travel, an interview is required. Applications for holiday exemptions must be submitted prior to travel. Holiday exemptions are counted in the absence rates of each student.

CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVALS 2025
A couple of weeks ago, Warrigal Rd held its Cross Country Carnivals. We had a very exciting morning with the Senior Cross Country (students from year 4-6), partaking in their respective year level races. When they were not running, they were cheering on their houses. The day started with students running competitive races of around 1.6km, to see who could qualify for the district cross country trials in Term 2. The top 6 in each of the races for students turning 10, 11 or 12, qualify for the school team. After the competitive races, all other students ran in the “Fun Run”. It was great to see everyone having a go and trying their best to finish the race. On top of that, it was amazing to witness the terrific team spirit and sportsmanship on display.
In the middle session, the Preps and Year 1’s took to the track to run 1 lap of our 450m school short course. It was great to see the upcoming little Warrigal talent on display, and the effort of all the students to run the course right to the very finish. In the afternoon session, the Year 2 and 3 students came out to run their New Intermediate Cross Country Course. It was again encouraging to see how many students were able to run this distance of just under 1km. There were some future rep stars in the making, that’s for sure! The day finished with some fantastic war cries from all four houses, singing their house songs loud and proud!
The HPE department would like to express their gratitude to all the parents that came to support the children and teachers that contributed to the day’s success. Thank you to the Ground Staff for their assistance with setting up and packing away. Finally, a big thank you to our 2025 House Captains and our extra helpers! They had showcased great leadership and enthusiasm throughout the carnival, and despite having run their races in the morning session, still found the energy to support and guide the little Warrigals around the track in the later sessions. This group of students led from the front, provided support to their younger peers, showed initiative, teamwork and great dedication to their role. We look forward to working with them throughout the year with our upcoming sports days.

Rehearsals are on this week
There have been a few students who need to attend morning rehearsals more frequently, as it is Education Queensland policy for students in the Instrumental program to attend one lesson and one rehearsal each week. If a student is missing rehearsal, it is important to email music1@warrigalroadss.eq.edu.au so we know where students are. Thank you to the students who consistently put in the effort to attend early rehearsals. Your dedication is greatly appreciated!
Easter Bonnet Parade Performance
The Junior Choir will be performing at the Easter Bonnet Parade on Friday. Students should wear their formal school uniform and meet at the hall at 9:00 am after having their name marked off the roll. The Junior Choir will perform their piece “Calico Cat”. The students have been working hard to memorise both the lyrics and the music, and we’re excited to see their performance.
White Performance Shirts
A big thank you to the parent volunteers Julie W, CJ N, Gina L, Yunjin R, Mary W, Charlene T, June G, Winnie L, Wei Sin L, Tracey F, Noor A, Yvonne H, Marie C and Jocelyn K who helped with the distribution of the Music Performance Shirts—this is a huge undertaking, and we are so grateful for your support!
Please ensure that your white performance shirt is kept in the best condition possible. As we move into a busy period, all performance groups will need their white shirt, along with the correct pants or culottes, to perform at the scheduled events in Term 2.
The first performance in Term 2 will be for the Chamber Orchestra and Chamber Choir at the school ANZAC service on Thursday, April 24th (Week 1) at the school hall. Please make sure you are ready with your performance uniform. The Concert Winds will wear their performance shirt for their beginner workshop on Thursday, May 1st, at MacGregor State School. The consent form on QParents will be available soon.
Holiday Practice Reminder
All Choir, Band, and Strings students need to find time over the holidays to practice their instruments and pieces of music. We have entered the Choral Fanfare competition, and we want to be able to perform at our best, so try to schedule a few minutes of practice each day. The Chamber Choir has received information regarding the “New Zealand National Anthem”, which will be in addition to the preparation for “I Will Sing You The Stars” in anticipation of the ANZAC Parade on Thursday, April 24th. All choir students should be working on their repertoire with the recordings sent via their school email over the holidays.
All emails are to be directed to the following address.
music1@warrigalroadss.eq.edu.au
In all emails, your child’s name and class will need to be included in the subject heading
