CORONAVIRUS
Please note that the new restrictions as available on the Health Department’s website alert the public to the revised actions that have been put in place for travellers leaving China or Hong Kong since the 1st February. Only Australian residents will be permitted to enter Australia.
The 14-day isolation period is still in place for students returning from either China or Hong Kong during the Christmas holiday period. I would like to thank and commend our community for responding to the advice from Education Queensland and the Health Department in regard to self-isolation.
As a school, it is normal procedure for us to talk to children about hygiene to assist us to restrict the spread of any virus, at the beginning of each year and throughout the year as required. This happens more intensely before and during winter. I spoke to the children about the hygiene recommendations from the Health Department on our whole school assembly last week.
We will continue to remind students about hygienic practices during the health epidemic. At the time that I wrote this, Queensland still had two confirmed cases of Coronavirus at the Gold Coast and we have no information about any change to this information. The information from the Health Department suggests that masks will not assist in the prevention of the virus. Please reinforce with your children to wash their hands with soap frequently, cough into the inside of their elbows or cover their faces when they cough. Children should not share food or drink bottles at any time, and particularly now.
If you have kept your child home as a precaution against contracting the virus but you did not travel to China or Hong Kong, your child has unauthorised absences. Healthy children who have not been to China or Hong Kong, and who have not had contact with anyone who has, should be at school. Children who are unwell should always stay at home. I appreciate the level of parent concern but we must stay calm in these moments of crisis, and respond to facts, not fear.
Thank you to the parents who have contacted the school to have their concerns addressed, and at all times Warrigal Road State School responds to the needs of the community with responsibility and care for the children at our school.
We hope that this health crisis will soon pass and please see your doctor with any health concerns.

Over the next school term, City Council officers will be conducting patrols around your school to ensure safe parking. Parking fines may be issued in cases where illegal parking is observed. Parents and guardians and visitors of our school can visit Council’s website at www.brisbane.qod.gov.au and search parking rules to learn more about parking in Brisbane.

YEAR SIX MEMENTO POLO SHIRT
We are now commencing the process of ordering senior shirts for our Year Six students. Notes will be emailed out soon.
The sublimated polo shirts will have a new design. All Year Six Students’ names (first name and surname) will be printed on the back of their shirt so please complete the consent form. If the consent form is not completed your child’s name will not appear on the shirt. Even if you do not wish to order a shirt, but wish for your child’s name to appear on the shirt, the consent form must still be completed and handed in to the school office.
The cost of the polo shirt is $39.00. Students may order multiple shirts if they wish. Orders must be paid for and placed at the school office by Friday 14 February.
It is important that your child tries on the sample shirts to find the appropriate size. We will also be checking the shirt sizes on all students who order one. Sample shirts will be in 6E as from Tuesday 4 February, so you are welcome to view these before or after school. The manufacturers suggest purchasing the next size up to allow for growth.

EMERGENCY CONTACTS
Parents please update your emergency contact numbers if and when your personal or work situation changes.
ABSENCES
Please advise the school of all absences including if your child will be late to school. This can be done via various communication methods. Phone the school absence line on 33405360 or email - absences@warrigalroadss.eq.edu.au, if your child is away from school. This can also be done via Qparents if you have registered. The school has implemented the same day alert system via a SMS message to parents’ mobile phone. You can respond via text for the absence notification. If you believe your child is at school and this is a possible mistake please call the school immediately.
Please be specific for the date, time and reason why your child is away, we do not ‘assume’ they are away for the same reason the next day unless stated. Parents are reminded that schools have a legal responsibility to follow up when students are absent from school without explanation. Class rolls are legal documents and teachers are accountable for maintaining accurate records, including reasons for student absences. Student achievement is affected by absenteeism. Parents are asked to help maximise student potential by ensuring their children are at school on time each day, ready to learn. Members of administration are available to discuss any on-going concerns you may have regarding absences.

INTRODUCTION
My name is Lisa Geary and I am very excited to be joining the Warrigal Road State School community as the Year 3 and Year 4 deputy principal. I have been working with the Department of Education for over 20 years in a number of roles including classroom teacher, support teacher: literacy and numeracy, master teacher, education advisor for the Australian Curriculum and most recently deputy principal. I now look forward to bringing these experiences to Warrigal Road State School to support the students, teachers and parents.
It has been wonderful to meet many of the students and parents over the last two weeks. I look forward to working with you and your children and hope to meet you at the Year 3 and Year 4 Parent Information Evening.

Please be reminded that our school playgrounds are NOT to be used before or after school. This rule is to ensure the safety of all students. Parents – please take your students home immediately after the bell. There are plenty of parks nearby, so please make use of these.
Payment for Excursions/Incursions and Resource Schemes
At Warrigal Road, we have numerous resource schemes, educational excursions, camps and school based incursions occurring for various year levels and specialist programs.
In response to parent feedback, we now send out all Year Level Resource Scheme, camp, excursion and incursion letters at the beginning of each term. For each activity, you will receive an invoice and a letter explaining the activity. A statement will follow which will show the total amount owing. Please check all emails received from the school against the statement you receive. Please hold all payments and enquiries until after you receive the Statement.
This will give you the option of either paying all outstanding amounts in one payment or paying individual activities when they are due (please check the information letter for the due date for each activity).
It is critical that payments and permission notes are returned to the school by the due date, which is a week earlier than the event itself. The school needs this time to finalise arrangements for buses, venues, etc and ensure that teachers are provided with accurate lists of participating students. Requests for late payments cannot be accommodated, so please make sure that you have responded by the due date.
Have you registered yet for QParents? This provides an easy option to check all outstanding payments at any time of the day. You can also make payments easily at any time of the day via the app. Parents who are not yet registered will receive an invitation email shortly. If you have any questions (after the email is received) please contact the QParents help line or the office .
The school’s preferred payment method is via BPoint which can be accessed via QParents or online at the BPoint website (there is a link on the bottom left hand corner of the invoice). This is a secure payment portal which can be used any time of the day or night. When using BPoint, please allow processing time for your payment to be received by the school. Payments made on BPoint prior to 5:00pm (AEDST) will appear in the school account the following day. Payments made after 5:00pm (AEDST) will appear in the school account two days later. If you are paying by BPoint please remember to return the permission slip at the bottom of the information letter to the school office.
Payments can also be made via Centrepay. Please contact the office if you wish to set up a new deduction.
Our Cash Collection window is open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 8.15am to 11.00am. Can you please make sure that all payments are made on these days only between these times? Money cannot be accepted after 11.00am as we cannot hold it on the premises. If you choose this payment method, please be prepared for long delays as the Cash Collection window is very busy at the beginning of the term, you may prefer to use an online payment method and avoid these lengthy delays.
Late last year the school sent out a Third Party Consent form to all students at the school. If you have not yet returned your forms to the office could you please do so by Friday 7 February? (Please see the attached Third Party Consent form for details of the requirements of consent for students to use external websites).
We will be unable to give your child access to the websites that we use during class time if you have not returned the completed form. These websites include Mathletics, Reading Eggs, Sunshine Online, Brainpop, etc.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school office.
